My initial thoughts are of the contrast between music made early in an artist’s career versus later on. I feel the compulsion with older artists, is to over stuff a composition with ideas rather than to explore a few and just let them breathe. This is most apparent for me with someone like Björk, and now to a minor degree Patrick Wolf.
Returning after many years, this album is quintessentially Patrick Wolf. It is lush, deep in erudite folklore, unashamedly high brow and to that effect, absolutely pretentious – and at the same time, absolutely lovely. It’s not quite as throughly listenable throughout as some of his previous albums, but there are still some incredible additions to Wolf’s discography. We are very privileged to be gifted this.
