Bring Her Back

Daniel & Michael Philippou
7/10 Movie

This movie was so predictable, that I correctly guessed the plot within the first 15 minutes. That said though, a movie does not have to be original – it only needs to be entertaining, and on that criteria, it succeeded for me.

Rob absolutely loathed this movie. A lot of this, I will attribute to the movie’s deliberate and slow pacing. He was not alone in feeling this though as it clearly did not engage the audience at our screening either. There was a woman in front of us, who after the first 30 minutes, was clearly bored and started scrolling and posting snippets of the movie on social media. Behind us, a group of women were taking selfies with the flash going off. It was a pretty appalling and I wish I had done more than just gently tap the shoulders of the brain rotten women to get them behave. Yes I am an old man.

All this aside though, it was a well produced movie with great cinematography, sound design and editing. The acting was good but the actual script was pretty obvious and let the actors down fairly often. Like other A24 horrors, this movie is really more a drama infused with supernatural elements. The horror is found predominantly in the human emotional abuse and less in jump scares, gore or suspense.

It must also be said that it is so powerful to have a movie with an Australian – and indeed, specifically South Australian – backdrop. This really enhanced my engagement with the movie but I will say, creates a major plot hole around the swimming pool as none in Australia would be allowed without a fence.

Not as good as “Talk To Me” unfortunately.
